Up here in Anchorage I listen to KNBA, the native run public radio station, and the morning guy, Danny Preston, is really great and finding and playing new music. He also does what he calls "Acoustic Alarm Clock" and at 6am he plays three acoustic songs.
Yesterday this gravelly kind-of blues-y voice came on (think Janis Joplin and Amy Winehouse), but it had an almost angelic quality behind the grit. The voice may have waken me up, but the lyrics really pulled me in:
I'm on the outside looking out
yeah, I don't need to see your papers
cuz I know what you're about
you had me by the bible and you had me by the belt
and you had me from the instant my cold love began to melt
and then you praise me for my inspiration
asked me for an explanation
followed up with hesitation
fit my primal expectation
I don't care but I don't mind
yeah, I don't need to see your papers
cuz I know what you're about
you had me by the bible and you had me by the belt
and you had me from the instant my cold love began to melt
and then you praise me for my inspiration
asked me for an explanation
followed up with hesitation
fit my primal expectation
I don't care but I don't mind
you can call me any time
If it's possible, it only gets better from there. The song is called "The Mistress" and I found a video I'm posting below, but the version is better on her newest album Hunter Hunter. (That's the version I woke up to.) You can hear it (as well as 3-4 songs from each of her albums) at her website (linked above ).
Turns out she's not a "new" artist . . . just new to me. This is her third album.
Sounds like lots of her other stuff might be too girl-y for all you men, but "You Won't Find Me" on War Brides is pretty bluegrassy and sounds a little like Alison Kraus. Hope you enjoy!
Cool, I'll check her out when I get some time. Just checkin' in on the blog right now. Thanks for sharing!
