Want to give you a rundown on the new album from Baltimore's J Roddy Walston and the Business. They held a CD release party last weekend at the Ottobar. This was my first show with new bassist Logan, who did a very nice job with the harmonies, but I missed Zack and his mustache.
If I had to describe their sound I would say equal parts Queen and The Black Crows with some Stones and Jerry Lee Lewis thrown in for good measure. I hear J Roddy enjoys responding with the question "Who do you listen to?" when asked what the band sounds like. After naming a few people he'll say "Yeah, that's kinda what we sound like".
This album has some different styles but what it never does is slow down to let you catch your breath. It has some full tilt rock and roll with Don't Break The Needle, Used to Did(The only song left over from their self produced album Hail Mega Boys) and the aptly named Uh Oh Rock & Roll. Some more bluesy songs with Pig & Pearls and Use Your Language, showing Billy has been practicing with the slide. To almost epic ballads in Brave mans Death and Caroline with their big sound and huge choruses. But my favorite song on the album is Full Grown Man. To me shows off what this band does best. With it's harmonies and group choruses that border on controlled screaming, I get this vision of these guys riding around in a Pacer.
Check out them out at http://www.myspace.com/jroddy. If you want more, my friend at work put the album up on our office FTP site so if you want to download it let me know and I can email the password to get it.
Awesome Drew, thanks. Can't wait to hear JRoddy's new stuff.
